Looking to join the Valentiniani? Email us at to learn more about us and sign up. Legio VI has prinicpate - era gear you can use while you build up your late roman kit, and there are no dues or fees required. Just be sure to come with a positive attitude, and read the purpose, expectations, and by-laws of Legio VI found here:

Just because you don't have all your equipment, doesn't mean you're not a member. We understand that this can be expensive and are patient, but we do expect you to complete your kit.

It is important to note that as part of Legio VI, we require all members to be 15 years of age with a parent present and signed permission, or be at least 18 years of age to participate in an event. This is for safety and liability reasons.

There are only a few simple steps taken towards joining:

FIRST: Inquire about joining. This well help you conceptualize re-enactment and what it is all about. Email me at

SECOND: Join the Placidi Valentiniani Felices Yahoo Group. This is where we discuss events, gear, and whatnot. You can ask questions and stay informed on upcoming events, and receive email updates. Then join Forum for Ancient Re-Enactment, or RomanArmyTalk. FAR discusses US based Roman Re-enactment, and RAT discusses historical finds, Roman history, and re-enactment. (This step is optional.)

THIRD: Print off the Legio VI Drill Manual, we use the Ludus Militis Tactica and you'll need to study up on the basic commands. Only the Magister Militum speaks Latin, so don't worry about having to learn a second language. We also recommend you purchase a copy of the Strategikon: it is fairly inexpensive, but not required.

FOURTH: Attend an event and build your gear! Gear is expensive, and we understand it takes time to have it all purchased, produced, and shipped. Legio VI has loaner kits you can use until then, so until then, check out the various equipment pages and do your research.

Minimum equipment required for full membership:

  • Helmet or Pannonian Cap
  • Tunic
  • Cloak
  • Fibula
  • Belt
  • Trousers
  • Boots
  • Scutum
  • Contus or Spiculum
  • Spatha
  • Plumbatae or Light Javelins
  • Sumbarmalis
  • Armor

This is because it's a difficult market and it's very easy to get stuck with an inaccurate piece!!!

Our parent, Legio VI, regularly holds a fabrica at the headquarters in Summerville. If you're looking to work on or make your own kit, we highly recommend you attend it.
