Kennesaw Military Timeline Trip

G FC V OCTOBER 2759 AUC
( September 28  2007)
This was my first trip with another legion.  It was also my first time portraying legionaires from around the time of Caesar.  I have never met any of the guys from the VI legion, and didn't know what to expect.  I have only had only e-mailed Rusty from legion VI.  I was excited about making new friends and getting a different view of Roman reenacting.
Saul met me at my apartment in Alexandria at around 1900. It took us a good hour to load all my stuff in Saul's car.  After loading up, and leaving Alexandria, Saul was getting me fired up about getting down to Georgia.  Saul can be a very excitable guy.  His enthausium can sometimes be catchy.  I was pretty tired from work, but after talking to Saul I was pretty excited to get down there.  We drove to Sauls parents home, and Saul's mother had a great dinner for us.  After packing up and heading out, we drove till about 0300 when we were both tired.  We stopped at a Hotel 6 that was just about the biggest dump I have ever been in in the states.  The sheets were dirty, the towels were dirty.  Both Saul and I slept on top of the covers in full clothes.

After a little sleep we both got up showered, and were ready to hit the road.  We decided that a pit stop in the lobby for a free breakfast would be ok.
When we went into the lobby I saw a woman wipe the floor with a rag then start cleaning the coffee maker with the same rag...we decided that Cracker Barrel would be a better alterative.  The trip down was uneventful, and as usual Saul and I both discussed millions of things all Roman.
Kennesaw-
I think we got there pretty early, we met a few Civil War reenactors, met the guy in charge of the event, and found where our camp would be set up.  It was in a pretty nice area toward the back of the event.  After unloading our stuff I met a few of the other members of the VI legion.
After a short wait, Rusty arrived with a huge red trailer full of all kinds of Roman stuff.  I never even imagined a guy could have that much stuff.  It was finally nice to meet people that I have only heard stories about.
Soon after introductions, I started helping out anyway possible, moving gear here and there, setting up tents, what ever needed to be done to get set up.
After a short time the camp started to look Roman, and I was actually enjoying myself just doing the set up.  I felt like I was an E-1 all over again, but I really didn't care.  After setting up, I went into the tent and wiped my body down with wipes.
We all headed out to a family restaurant called the Whistle Stop Cafe'.  A simple but homey place with great food a good service.  For a small place the cafe had a huge selection.
After a full stomach we all headed back to the camp.  Alot of the older guys got a hotel.  A few of us stayed behind in the camp.  We had a blast, we practiced drilling, throwing Pila, Latin, you name it.
After a while, we got a roaring fire going, and sat around the fire and talked to a few other reenactors and just hung out and drank.  It was a good time.
I think I went to bed around 0100.  One thing I didn't count on...the TRAIN...
We had set up camp right next to a rail way, with alot of traffic on it.  The train blew it's horn every half hour all night long, every time it passed through the area.  I pretty much had to get up.  I hung out with another guy that couldn't sleep, and tended to the fire.

A N PRID KALENDS OCTOBER 2759 AUC
( September 30, 2007)

As the light of approaching day started to turn the dark sky grey then yellow with new a new sun the entire area started to stir, that and the continuous blasts from the train’s horn. I got dressed pretty quickly and was excited about the day’s events.  I met up with a few of the guys and Saul and headed up to the Train Station where they had a small continental breakfast set up for all the re-enactors. After walking back down to the camp we saw that other groups were starting to show up.  Pirates, Civil war infantry and artillery, Calvary from what looked like the Middle Ages, WWII MP and civil affairs units motorized, even a Scottish re-enactor group.

I think it may have been around 0800 or 0900 when people started showing up.  After walking around the camp I must admit that I think that the Roman camp was the best and probably maintained more than the others.  I heard comments from people as we walked by, it really seemed to me that the other members were in awe of our professional appearance.  Our camp was squared away and it just looked great.  Later in the early morning Rusty gave us a cohort briefing on the marching drill.  I was having a little trouble with adjusting my stance and grip with the Pila.  Rusty showed us a little trick that made it really easy for me.  After that I got bashed in the nose and shins because of the way I was holding my Scutum.  It never occurred to me that hold the scutum flush against my shins so during a charge they wouldn’t be hurt, not did I consider to watch my face, and that my own shield could be used against me.  It was a lesson I have remembered and often think about when I pick up my scutum.  I also think of the things that I learned over the years in my real life military training.  It took experienced personnel to show me how to hold weapons, to tuck in a strap here or there, short cuts and tricks, tactics and procedures that just made things easier.  I in turn passed down what I learned from that senior person to new guys as I advanced.  It must have been the same 2,000 years ago.  Just something that came to mind after having sore shins.

After a little drilling, and pila chucking, we went back to camp.

There lots of visitors, and the crowed seemed to genuinely be interested in out cohort.  The crowd asked appropriate questions, and engaged us with lively discussion.  As always most people only knew what they had seen in a movie, or read in a historical fiction novel.  The most common question was the use of the word Caesar, how many Caesars were there and when he died.  I actually got in to a “polite” discussion that Caesar died because Commodus killed him.  I explained that Caesar was a title that was used after he dies.  The guy was very insulted; he said he knew that Caesar died in like 200AD, because that is what he saw in Gladiator.  I again explained how Octavian became Caesar Augustus; he didn’t seem to know who Octavian was…

Later as afternoon was approaching, Saul and I decided to go harass the pirates, they kept stealing our stuff.  So we went over and started kicking their stuff around, smashing and yelling at them.  After, I heard all kinds of laughing.  I looked down and saw that the scabbard for my gladius was missing.  Everyone was laughing at me, I felt like an ass.  I just messed up their site and now had to go back an apologize to the pirates and ask them for my scabbard.   I decided to sweeten the deal by offering them so Grappa, I figured since they were drunk on Rum, they would want to try the Grappa.  Sure enough the older pirate drank it down, and said,

“Well played sir”.

I gave him a pat on the back the younger pirate gave me they scabbard back.

After more Q&A Rusty called us to form up.  We walked into the field and got into a formation.  We marched out to the demonstration area and gave them a pretty good show.  After Rusty talked about the rank and structure and took questions from the people that watched us.

After that visitors started to trickle in and slowly stop.  After the demonstration was secured for the day we were treated to a really good dinner by the host of the Military Timeline.  I went across the street to the Museum and really just delved into the history of the area and the Civil War.  I sometimes wish I could participate in the other reenacting areas, but it is just too much.  I am happy doing just the Roman period.  The Museum was impressive, and I wanted to stay and see everything, after I almost got locked in I headed back to camp.  By that time most of the older guys were gone, and the drinking and fun was just beginning by the fire.  We sat around and just had a good time, the Scottish guy brought out some fine old scotch, one of the guys ran to the store to buy more wine, I broke out the Grappa, and a civil war re-enactor a young kid broke out his own home made wine..  We stayed up pretty late, and just had a general good time, got drunk told stories by the fire, talked about women and then I slept in the Centurions tent.  After all the drinking, I slept pretty well, train or no train.

G FC KALDES OCTOBER 2759 AUC

October 1, 2007

After a breakfast at our favorite Whistle stop Cafe' Saul and I decided to pack up and head home.  Saul had classes and I had to head out to Ft. Irwin as I got home for work.  After saying our goodbyes, Saul ran off with Rusty's Facisus, I think that the night before Saul may have slept with it and even made love to it. It was funny, as we were packing all the guys kept stealing it from Saul, and hiding it.  Saul was out of his mind looking for it.
I wish we could have stayed an extra day for the events.

First outing by the cohort III, I think we did all right.
