During the reforms of Marius during the last Punic War the Roman soldier was required to carry a good portion of his gear to eliminate a long baggage train.  According to ancient writers during the time and to mosaics and sculptures they could have carried all or some of the following: a dolabra (pick-axe), truff cutter (possibly doubled as a shovel, a sickle, a hachet, one to three sudes (palisade stakes), and basket.
