NARRATIVE:
At 1159 hrs, 23 August 79, a report was received of a possible robbery at the Praetorivm by Tesserarivs Lvcivs Tertinivs Severvs
at the Administrative Table outside the tent of the Primvs Pilvs from a legionary of Legio V Alavdae, Marcus. The verbal report stated that unfavorable portents had been observed by at least two (2) legionaries (Marcvs
and Avlvs) of Legio V concerning the auspices surrounding the Legion Aqvila. Tesserarivs L. Severvs was deployed to the scene and arrived at 1205 hrs. Inspection of the scene found that the Eagle was missing from behind the Legatvs’s chair in the ante-room
of the Praetorivm. The staff on which the Aqvila
would have been situated was still in place, indicating that the perpetrator had detached the Eagle by way of unscrewing it. No witnesses were found at the scene except for a slave girl chained to a post at
the extreme front of anteroom. I questioned her, but concluded appeared she knew
nothing of the theft.
I ordered the Avlvs to take guard of the Praetorivm and for Marcvs to report the incident to the Primvs Pilvs, Centvrio
Justus Rvstivs Longinvs. Moments later, the Primvs Pilvs arrived and looked over
the situation. We were ordered to arms, myself acting as signifier, and were
immediately deployed across the zone-of-truce to the barbarian camp (legionary Avlvs was left guarding the Praetorivm). Legionaries of Legio V Alavdae were ordered into two detachments under the leadership
of Legio V Alavdae Centvrio Sextvs Galerivs Dolabella and raided the barbarian encampment.
I remained with the Primvs Pilvs during the questioning of some barbarians. The
Eagle was not located during the raid and search was called off. A subsequent
search of the barbarian chef’s tent by legionaries led by Legio V Optio Daniel Pigg revealed the location of the Eagle
and returned it to the camp. This was reported to me and immediately to Primvs
Pilvs Longinvs.
Investigations and inquiries following the raid revealed a private investigation by a certain anonymous “Slayer
from Syracvsa” gladiator had been held in which barbarians were questioned. This
report was not received by the Tesserarivs. Investigations have revealed that
the private investigation was personally initiated by one, Legatvs Militvm, Legatvs Cnaevs Jvlivs Lucvllvs. The General has been questioned with the utmost respect and dignity in which it was revealed he had been
informed of the perpetrator’s identity. He did not reveal the perpetrators
identity to the Tesserarivs at that moment.
At about 1300 hrs, during Pay Formation, the General approached me and accused me of being party to the incident. He demanded the whole of my pay as a bribe in order to keep his “mouth shut.” I was confused, but forced to turn over my pay or face execution by reason of insubordination
to the Legate. The incident was reported to Primus Pilvs Longinvs later that
evening at approximately 2300 hrs. Last report indicated that Legatvs Jvlivs
Lucvllvs had been ordered before the wise and divine Imperator Caesar Titvs Flavius Vespasianvs called TITVS. Command of the legion was temporarily handed to the Tribvnvs Laticlavivs.
A related incident (Case Number: CR(P) 79-0823/002) occurred immediately after the
Gladiator Demonstration at 1653 hrs. It concerned the THEFT of the Eagle and
its replacement with a blue, plastic football. Investigations into that incident
have revealed a tourist had been employed by at least one of the barbarians to take the Eagle from the Praetorivm. The tourist was questioned and discovered to have been a visiting close acquaintance of the barbarian in
question—both the barbarian and tourist were detained at the time of the incident.
It is not believed the second incident has any relation to the first aside from “copycat” behavior. The tourist is currently under arrest at the provincial penitentiary in Neapolis awaiting
starvation or trial. The barbarian in question was tortured, beaten, and executed
by crucifixion. He was pronounced dead by the Prima Cohors field surgeon
at 0967hrs, 25 August 79.
CONCLVSIONS:
At this time, it is the opinion of the Office of Watchword and Security that a conspiracy exists among the elite of
the gladiators and the natives of this region of Italia. Legatvs Jvlivs Lucvllvs
remains on suspicion of WILLFUL ACT OF SADISHION, CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT TREASON, and ENTRAPMENT; his sentence being left to
Caesar. L. Tertinivs
Severvs was charged with SADISHION. Since the Tesserarivs was the victim of the Entrapment, committed by the Legatvs,
the demotion to milities gregalis, confinement to the brig for six months, and twelve lashes was suspended. The
courts have decided to deduct half his pay for six months, be confined to the fort for nine months, and 120 hours,
unpaid, service to the community. He still remains under surveillance.
