The SOTW Roman Papilio Tent

The latest in our Brutally Authentic line is the SOTW Roman Papillo Leather Tent.  The main resource was the Van Driel- Murray Article "New Light on Old Tents" from the Journal of Roman Military Equipment Studies Vol 1, 1990. The article examines several pieces of a tent from Vindolanda and compares them to other finds. The Vindolanda tent finds were from a high walled tent with a more flat roof angle. On Trajans column many steep angled tents can be seen right along side the high walled.

The leather is vegetable tanned cowhide (admittedly the original was goat skin).  Rope is a twisted sisal.  Available with a collapsible Wooden Frame and SOTW Roman tent Iron Pegs designed by Alex Krychenko.  Basic design is taken from the Vindolanda tent find with higher side walls (shorter ones can be special ordered for an additional charge.)  The tent pictured has not yet been waterproofed to display its vegetable tanned color.  All corners and stress points are reinforced with asecond layer of leather.  Rope ties are correctly reconstructed as are the tabs and drawstrings for the door ties.  Leather is approximately 2-3 oz and is of a very high quality suitable to last many years.  Panels are roughly 20*30 as the Vindolanda find.

Stitching is a mix of machine and hand stitching.  Panels are stiched on the inside and are also glued internally so they will be waterproof.  Reinforcements are hand stitched.  Thread is a heavy gauge thread for leather.  A complete hand stitched tent is available at considerably higher cost and delay.

Complete package includes a full set of  SOTW Roman Tent Stakes.  These Roman tent pegs are the replicas of the original finds, discovered in the Kupa river near Sisak and now held in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, Croatia (the originals are published in Militaria Sisciensia—Finds of the Roman military equipment from Sisak in the holdings of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb).  They are of the same type, which was in regular use already from the Republican period and throughout the 1st century AD.  Similar pegs of both types are depicted in RME,  page 70, fig. 35, items 5-9.  Size is 10 feet x 10 feet x 6 feet tall.  Side walls are about 32 inches high.  This is a special order item and will take approximately six months for delivery.

Cost of the tent complete (with poles, ropes, iron pegs): $4800 USD SHIPPED

Cost of just the leather tent : $4375 USD SHIPPED

Terms are 50% down, 50% on completion.

SOTW Roman Tent Stakes

The Latest BRUTALLY AUTHENTIC SOTW Item!!

These four Roman tent pegs are the replicas of the original finds, discovered in the Kupa river near Sisak and now held in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, Croatia (the originals are published in Militaria Sisciensia—Finds of the Roman military equipment from Sisak in the holdings of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb). A large peg is 291mm in length, and is similar to the type documented among the finds from Numantia, which would speak in favor of its early date. Three smaller specimens are 181mm, 171mm, and 152mm in length. They are of the same type, which was in regular use already from the Republican period and throughout the 1st century AD.  Similar pegs of both types are depicted in RME,  page 70, fig. 35, items 5-9.

The Roman army made prolific use of tents, so the discovery of a multitude of tent pegs on numerous sites is not surprising. It should be mentioned that even though such artifacts are normally considered tent pegs, that was probably not their only function. They could have also been used as pegs for tethering horses, and perhaps as the tools for marking the camp layout.  These are special order items so allow 3-4 months for delivery for now, we will stock ythem eventually!  Throw away those modern pegs!!!!
